Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is fun, safe, and very engaging. The ideas are simple to learn for beginners but take time and effort to master. We specialize in working with beginners and have a self defense focus in our teaching style.

We teach our exclusive S.A.F.E Bullyproofing system to all of our kids Jiu Jitsu classes. Not only do kids learn self defense but they also build confidence, discipline, awareness, and self reliance through Jiu-Jitsu.

We teach the basics of striking with punches and kicks in a safe, playful environment. Kickboxing is a great compliment to Jiu Jitsu and helps to make a well rounded fighter who focuses on defense but is also capable of striking.

Each class begins with a simple warm up. Then your coach will lead the class through the technique portion of the day. Technique is done slow, and controlled so even when your brand new you get a chance to practice. After technique sometimes we play a “mini game” based on the technique and position of the day and then we line up, thank our training partners and that ends the class. There won’t be any live sparring or rolling on your first day to keep you safe.

At SBG Niagara we aren’t an ego based competitive gym. We want our students to learn martial arts, Jiu Jitsu, kick boxing and MMA in a place where they feel comfortable and safe. The owner of SBG Niagara Coach Richard Beaupit also has 30 years of experience teaching and owning a school.

No! This is a massive misconception in martial arts. The only thing that’s going to get you fit is to start training and practicing regularly. You can go at a pace that works for you and build your fitness up over time.

The order of belt ranking in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is: White, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black.

Everyone starts as a white belt, no matter their age, physical condition, or previous martial arts experience.

As you make progress in you knowledge, skills, and abilities you will be recognized by stripes on your belt and eventually a new belt level.

Getting good at Jiu Jitsu specifcally takes time and practice the secrets to advancing in rank are to show up consistently, enjoy learning, and love the process of training.

The vast majority of students will train with us 2-3 times per week. As you are just starting out and everything is brand new 2  classes a week might be perfect for you. 

Once you’ve got the hang of the basics you may decide to bump up to 3 or 4 classes per week. 

So much of this depends on the individual who is training but for a broad statement 2-3 times per week is what you should aim for to see consistent lon term progress.

 

If you’ve never done martial arts or Jiu-Jitsu before you’ll notice results within the first week or two. Your muscles might be a little sore but that will greatly reduce and you’ll find yourself not getting tired as easyily and your body boucing back faster after class. You’ll increase strength, flexibility and stamina and you will notice these changes very quickily with consitent training.

Rebecca Sweeney

Head Coach

Becca’s athletic journey began in childhood, marked by her incredibly strong work ethic. Introduced to the martial arts when her daughter started training, she initially gravitated toward kickboxing and Muay Thai. Soon after, however, she immersed herself in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA, ultimately turning her passion into a profession by teaching at the academy.

Driven to test her skills, Becca achieved a notable 4-1 record in amateur kickboxing and Muay Thai. In 2006, she made a significant leap into professional MMA. Becca holds the distinction of being the first woman to compete in King of the Cage Canada, boasting an impressive 2-0 professional record. Additionally, in 2009, just under 20 years ago, she earned the rank of Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, becoming only the second Canadian female to have done so at the time.

Michael Sweeney

Head Coach

Mike is a dedicated lifelong martial artist committed to sharing his passion and expertise with his students. Training since his early teens, he has extensive expertise in disciplines such as Shotokan Karate, Jun Fan Gung Fu, Filipino Martial Arts, Combat Submission Wrestling and Muay Thai Kickboxing, and brings a wealth of diverse knowledge to his instruction. In 2007, over a decade and a half, Mike achieved the prestigious rank of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black Belt from his Nova União teacher, Wagnney Fabiano.

Affiliated with Straight Blast Gym since 2003, Mike and his wife, Becca, owned and operated a successful martial arts school in Kingston, Ontario for over 23 years. In 2018, they returned from international travels with the goal of using their extensive experience to create the ultimate jiu-jitsu training facility. They initially settled in the Okanagan Valley and immediately began sharing their knowledge with the vibrant community at Pacific Top Team Vernon. Simultaneously, they began formulating a plan to create their new facility in Alberta.

With Mike’s wealth of experience, commitment to growth, and a warm, inclusive teaching approach, you can trust that you’re in the best hands when you train at Straight Blast Gym Calgary.

HOLD POLICY

Month-to-Month Membership Agreements and Annual Membership Agreements: You may place your Membership on hold two (2) times per calendar year up to three (3) consecutive months each time. Advanced notice of at least two (2) business days is required. The hold must be 30 days in duration at a minimum and 30 days must elapse between holds. Upon expiration of the term of the hold, your account will automatically become active and payments will resume. Should you choose to return prior to the end of their hold period, the hold will be released and payments will resume.

CANCELLATION POLICY

All membership agreements require 30-days written notice to cancel your membership. This form will serve as your 30-days written cancellation notice. Note that if you have a scheduled renewal payment within 30-days of your invoice billing date, the payment will be processed as scheduled. Your membership will be canceled at the end of your final paid month. All payments are non-refundable. All grandfathered membership rates will also be forfeited and returning members will be subject to current rates.
